A strong and well-organized planning commission is the key to a successful planning program. While Article II of the "Pennsylvania Municipalities Planning Code" (MPC) provides the authority to have a planning commission, it offers no guidance for how to be an effective unit serving the elected governing body and the community. Using hands-on activities and interactive discussions, this course will explore the full range of a planning commission’s work, how it can be organized to accomplish more of its goals, and what is needed to prepare members to get involved in the group’s work. This course is being offered as part of MCPC's Planning Smarter Montco 2021, a Montgomery County initiative offering planning education and outreach. We have worked with PMPEI to schedule Montco instructors/MCPC staff for one date of each of the 90-minute virtual courses being offered statewide through PMPEI’s online learning series in 2021. Registration and payment are being handled directly by PMPEI.

Participants will have opportunities to ask questions and take part in an interactive mapping exercise and a survey. This 6-mile-long segment, when completed, will begin at Welsh Road in Upper Dublin Township and terminate at the county’s Pennypack Trail. The entire Cross County Trail, once completed, is planned to run 17.5 miles from Conshohocken in the west to the Pennypack Trail in the east and will connect the Schuylkill River, Wissahickon, Cresheim, and Power Line Trails. If unable to attend, visit the project website after April 22 for a video, interactive map, and survey and to participate online until May 13. Registration required to receive Zoom link.
