Recycling in the commonwealth started in 1988 with the Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act (also known as Act 101). Among other things, the Act requires each county to develop a plan to manage its own waste and assure a minimum of 10 years disposal capacity, see current Waste Plan linked below. Each municipality in Montgomery County directs their own trash and recycling program within the parameters of PA Act 101.
Annual Reporting Requirements
Each year the county reports municipal recycling data to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for use in compiling statewide analysis of recycling and its benefits.
the COUNTY Recycling Coordinator
The position of recycling coordinator was created to assist municipalities and their residents on fulfilling the requirements of Act 101. In addition, the coordinator is responsible for recycling education and managing countywide collection events.
