Closures & Delays
PROJECT DELAY FOR SWAMP PIKE BRIDGE #166
The health and safety of our residents is our number one priority, especially for our road and bridge projects. The County has invested tens of millions of dollars since 2013 to reduce – with the goal of eliminating – the number of structurally deficient bridges in our inventory.
Safety is at the forefront of this project, and every project, and that is why we follow established protocol when working with PennDOT, our staff, and municipalities on road closures. As standard practice, we worked with New Hanover Township, their engineering staff, and PennDOT to plan for necessary detours because of the need to repair or replace structurally deficient bridges.
The detour routes for all four New Hanover Township projects were based on traffic analysis, presenting the lowest possible risk to public safety, and included the minimum increase in travel time possible. Based upon prior planning with all partners, which was approved, we believe we had a plan that met the safety needs of the community.
However, due to concerns from the community, the County will delay the start of the bridge #166 project.
After consultation with staff and our construction vendor, it is important to note the following impacts from the delayed start of the Bridge #166 project:
The County cannot guarantee that a July 1 start date will be met due to the above factors. We also cannot ensure that all four bridges of concern will not be closed at one time at a later date; due to the uncertainty of the completion of the PennDOT project. Finally, we cannot guarantee PennDOT inspections will not result in a State-mandated closure of other structurally deficient bridges in New Hanover Township.
UPCOMING CLOSURE: Bridge 162 (Stump Road)
Starting Monday, May 2nd, Stump Road will be closed to all traffic between Neshaminy Falls Drive and Overview Lane. This is to allow for the replacement of Bridge 162 which spans Little Neshaminy Creek.
The road will remain closed for the duration of the work to replace the bridge, which is scheduled to last through late November. Please exercise caution and follow the posted detour.
Ongoing Bridge CLOSURE: Lutheran road over minister creek
Based on an April 18, 2022, routine inspection by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Bridge 163, Lutheran Road over Minister Creek in New Hanover Township, was found to be deteriorated below the threshold for continued vehicle use and cannot safely remain open. Montgomery County's Department of Assets and Infrastructure will close the bridge effective today.
The condition of the bridge dictates inspection every three months, with additional inspections added in the event of storm damage.
Traffic will be detoured according to the already approved plans coordinated with PennDOT and the township.
Montgomery County has been working on the planned replacement of Bridge 163 and is currently scheduled to begin construction on June 20, 2022. Bridge 163 is scheduled to be completed and reopened in September 2022.
